Each week we go beyond the headlines and explore what AI will mean – for people, for businesses, the future of work, learning and culture, and more.
Use these examples to ask better questions about “where next?”, and why putting people’s needs at the heart of your AI strategy will be the key to success.
This week, learn from:
Wayve – could AIs that explain themselves help reduce distrust and skepticism?
A2RL – will Abu Dhabi’s Autonomous Racing League be the future normal of sport?
WARN – smartwatch AI predicts atrial fibrillation 30 minutes before it arrives.
🗣️ Wayve – could AIs that explain themselves help reduce distrust and skepticism?
Despite all its promise, AI has a trust problem. Which is why you should find this demo from the self-driving car startup Wayve so inspiring.
As the video shows, its LINGO-2 model provides a continuous commentary that explains the actions that it’s taking, in real-time.
Even more exciting is that because language is an integral part of the model, it can better respond to natural questions and requests (“pull over”, “turn right”) made by the car’s human passengers.
Compare this to other ‘black box’ models – these might be fine to write a quick haiku with, but people are rightly scared when they think about them being used to make critical healthcare, financial or legal decisions.
💡Where might explainable AI models help foster trust and a sense of control?
🏎️ A2RL – will Abu Dhabi’s Autonomous Racing League be the future normal of sport?
The inaugural race in the ASPIRE Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is set to take place this weekend in Abu Dhabi. Teams from the UAE as well as the US, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, China and more are competing for a US$2.25 million prize fund.
This is a fascinating story, but here I just want to focus specifically on what this signals for the future normal of entertainment.
Garry Kasparov, who refers to himself as “the first knowledge worker whose job was threatened by a machine” offers a great insight into why people will still matter, even as AI gets ever competent:
“We are still interested in people. Cars move faster than humans, but so what? The element of human competition is still there, because we want to know that our team, our guy, he or she is the best in the world.”
Sport (and music, art and fashion) is about human stories as much as its formal results, as the success of Drive To Survive showed.
Indeed, given the public skepticism towards AI that we mentioned above, perhaps we need a similar docuseries focused on celebrating the engineers and coders in the A2RL? And there’s a lesson here for everyone, not just those in the entertainment industry:
💡What if you told the human stories behind your AI efforts?
💗 WARN – smartwatch AI predicts atrial fibrillation 30 minutes before it arrives
In our recent report on people-first AI in healthcare, we wrote:
we’ll use AI to make the invisible, visible – detecting signals and patterns in countless streams of health-related data that no human doctor would be able to, allowing for earlier and more effective interventions. Are you ready for the pre-health revolution?
Now, researchers at the University of Luxembourg have developed WARN (Warning of Atrial fibRillatioN), an AI that can predict the onset of atrial fibrillation (AF) over 30 minutes in advance.
Most encouraging is that the model’s predictions are on basic heart rate data, which can be collected by standard smartwatches and fitness monitors; while the warning comes early enough to enable patients to take preventative oral antiarrhythmic medications.
